Addressing the gender pay gap in Dang, Gujarat

Updated: Feb 23

Meet Ribkaben, our Citizen Champion working in Dang, Gujarat with Pragati, a women’s rights organisation. Ribkaben and her husband used to share household responsibilities, but they faced frequent criticism and ridicule from their neighbours. This social pressure led Ribkaben to hesitate and decline her husband's help. However, things changed when she attended our training.

Our Constitution for Citizen Action training with AKRSP offered Ribkaben a fresh perspective on equality, leading to a transformation in her household dynamics. She began letting go of the belief that household chores were solely a woman's responsibility and encouraged her husband to help again. In addition, Ribkaben made a startling discovery - she was earning less at her workplace solely because of her gender. This injustice fueled her determination to challenge sexist practices, not only speaking up for herself but also for other women.

Ribkaben continues to be a voice of change, working tirelessly to ensure that all women in her community receive the same pay for their labour, just like their male counterparts. Her citizenship journey exemplifies how the Constitution can empower us to improve our everyday lives and uplift others in the process!
