Poonam Sahu: Taking Ownership for Sustainable Development in her Community
Poonam is from Koderma in Jharkhand. She was married as a child. At 15, she was already a mother! She completed Class 10 while still nursing her baby. Despite all odds, she went on to complete her MA. She was consumed with the everyday, basic problems that people faced - broken handpumps and roads, no ration, failed housing schemes, absconding school teachers…the list was endless.
She started filing grievance redress applications for each of these problems. Since 2016 she has filed over 500 applications! And she has taught this skill to women in Self Help Groups in her community. “Jab aap sahi avedan likhte hain, samvidhan aur adhikaar ko jodte hain, tab aapki baat mein vajan aata hai,” says Poonam.
Their efforts have resulted in improvements in many basic amenities in their villages. It has also ensured that when there is a problem, the women know how to solve it. Their journey exemplifies the power of knowledge and empowerment in securing sustainable development.

Poonam and Narendra, and thousands of Community Champions like them, are our driving force. We aim to empower them and their communities to bring about sustained change and make their lives equal, just, free, and dignified.
The Community Champions often come from rural areas and belong to poor and deprived communities like dalits, tribals, women, small farmers, and unemployed youth They face systemic challenges like caste discrimination, gender bias, entrenched hierarchy, violence, and corruption. They also experience persistent issues related to poor governance, lack of access to basic entitlements, education, and livelihoods.
Through intensive training programs, we equip them with the knowledge, skills, and tools to use their constitutional rights and duties, engage with local governance structures, and find solutions to their problems. With this, they work in their communities to educate others, raise awareness, and take sustained action.
We envision of building a community of 75,000 Community Champions across India in the next decade. The three pillars of our work are:
Train
Champions participate in training journeys of different durations based on context and need. The focus is on practical application of constitutional and legal provisions using case studies, AV's, tools and materials for community action.
Sustain
Champions are further supported with continued handholding, reviews and collaboration, guidance and updates on recent laws, schemes, court judgements and relavant materials.
Network
Champions become members of a pan-india network that fosters lasting interconnections, amplifies voices from diverse communities, and facilitates ongoing learning and sharing.
